Transparency on the removal of harmful speech: users, platforms, and law

The project is motivated by the need to improve the criteria for transparency in removal, by platforms, of the content created that circulates online, as the processes involve civil and political guarantees, such as freedom of expression, association, privacy and non-discrimination. The improvement of definitions and accountability measures of the platforms’ performance on the discourse created by its users also reduces legal and consumer uncertainties and contributes to a scenario of greater confidence. For this reason, the project integrates three research axes: analysis of government policies and legal decisions, comparison of the content policies of the main platforms and measures to make users aware of harmful content.
This project is funded by public call for projects with the theme “Content Policies on Social Media Platforms” of 2019, from Facebook Research. This does not link the published results to the approval or any type of interference by the funding institution, according to the research ethics policies of the Reference Institute for Internet and Society.
